Santa Barbara Airport Terminal to be Named After Former Mayor

A former mayor and judge will be honored with his name on the Santa Barbara Airport Terminal.

After weeks of discussion and a list of names from the community, the Santa Barbara city Council decided the terminal will be named after John T. Rickard.

As mayor in the 1950’s he was able to work out a geographical plan that connected Santa Barbara to land in the Goleta Valley via a preservation zone in the ocean that was mainly designed to improve tourism and prevent near shore oil drilling.

The plan worked and the connection was made.

Even though the actual zone has changed the line between the city of Santa Barbara and the airport site is still in tact.

The new terminal opened last summer.
